Hello Free Spirits,
What If I told you that by eating your spinach salad with a cup of glass milk, would be like throwing your spinach out in the garbage. Fact is, milk effects and interferes with your bodies absorption of Iron. And what is the most common deficiency among Canadians and Americans? Iron. And what do Canadians consume the most out of their diet? Dairy and meat.
So why is it a problem?
It is estimated that as much as 30% of the world’s population (2 billion people) suffer from iron deficiency anemia. Iron deficiency is the most common for women and adolescent girls.
Symptoms of Iron deficiency
Most common include fatigue, weakness, headache, decreased work capacity, an inability to maintain body temperature in a cold environment. Iron deficient people experience changes in behaviour, decreased resistance to infection, and adverse pregnancy outcomes.
Given that over 50% of Canadians do not eat enough fruits and vegetables as recommend for health. It’s no surprise that we the majority of the population is Iron deficient. By eating a diet rich in fruits and Vegetables we are guaranteed to get enough vitamin c, e and iron.
I used to be iron deficient for many years mainly as a teenager in high school when most of my diet consisted of Pizza’s hot dogs and chips. Totally unhealthy. And as a result my mood was affected, I felt terrible overall. I’m pretty sure I had anxiety and depression, looking back I’m pretty sure, my diet and lifestyle were causing me to feel this way. Once I improved my diet my overall mood and outlook on life improved. Going vegetarian, was the best decision I made for my mood and health.
Six months after making the switch to vegetarianism, I had my blood tested to see what’s up. Turns out everything was great! Not only that but the diet full of fruits and vegetables and low sugar completely changed my blood test results for the better. I used to be severely anemic and I remember getting phone calls from the doctor saying my white cell blood count was low. Not good. But now after making the switch to vegetarian, I have a healthy level of iron in my blood.
The proper way to get Iron
The best way to get your iron is not through supplements but through regular foods. Iron is best absorbed when there is Vitamin C present. So be sure to have some fruits for dessert after your Iron rich meal. I don’t like to promote meat on my blog, so even though there is some iron in meat products. You are better off getting your Iron from non-meat products. These include products such as legumes, dried fruit, leafy greens such as spinach and kale, and fortified grain products.
